Madison Lewis (center), a Middletown Area High School student who has cancer, has been an inspiration for the school’s first Mini-THON, which will benefit the Four Diamonds Fund. Those involved include (clockwise, from left) Morgan Light, Rachael Ruiz, Christina Brinton, Kaitlin Shartle, Susan Davison, Kayce Deibler, Madison Bayhart, Brianne Roksandic, Jenna Wilkinson and Ashley Jerome.

Middletown Area High School (MAHS) will hold its first-ever Mini-THON on Friday, March 9, to help the fight against childhood cancer.

The event is being organized by an alliance of student organizations at MAHS, along with their advisers. The theme is "Highlight Your Dreams." All proceeds will go to the Four Diamonds Fund, which was founded to help meet the needs, both financially and medically, for the care and treatment of children being treated for cancer at Penn State Children's Hospital at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Participating students will stay active in the high school gym from 4 to 10 p.m. on March 9 by dancing, playing games and doing other activities.

Madison Lewis, a ninth-grade student at MAHS who is coping with cancer, is one of the many young people who have given MAHS students the motivation to raise money to fight childhood cancer.

Members of the community can help the effort by sponsoring a participating student with a monetary donation or by donating refreshments, such as water and other thirst-quenching beverages, as well as gift cards for grocery stores and area restaurants. Donated food and beverages must be prepackaged; homemade items cannot be accepted.

Those interested in making a donation or sponsoring a dancer may contact the school’s principal, Patrick G. Hruz, at 948-3333 or for assistance. To learn more about the Four Diamonds Fund, readers may go to to see a video.
